An Unfortunate Fact

Posted by admin on November 11th, 2009

The Department of Justice has a branch known as the Office on Violence Against Women.   In 1994, Congress passed the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA 1994) as part of the Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act. VAWA is a comprehensive legislative package designed to end violence against women.  It’s focus is on sexual assault (rape), domestic violence, dating violence and stalking. However, if you run a search for “prostitution” or “prostitutes” on the OVW website, guess what?   Your search will return no results.   The Department of Justice is the highest branch of law enforcement in our country, and yet completely disregards the alarmingly high rate of violence perpetrated against sex workers.   tlp 16840
