Shameful

Stigmatization and prejudices against sex workers run deep, not only in this country but around the world.   The following are examples of the shameful and irresponsible ways people and media portray sex workers.

“Prostitute Kilproskillerler” – From Hong Kong comes this vile movie who’s plot is described as:  Three men, fed up with prostitutes and their perceived role in breaking up happy marriages, decide to go out and hunt down as many prostitutes as they can find.

Grand Theft Auto is a well-known video game which rewards points for assaulting and killing prostitutes.   On this gaming board, kids brag about killing prostitutes:

“The other night I portrayed Niko as a serial prostitute killer.  So what I did was(I like to portray Niko with different personalities sometimes)take a car and drove around in Liberty City and picked up three hookers in one night and I took them in an alley and proceeded to you-know-what and then once she gets out,I immediately get out and blast the hooker with the shotgun and give multiple shots to the head and then take the money and drive away. It was fun.”

“When I go hooker killing I always use a knife. I never stop at 3.”

“More fun in real life.”

‘I think we can all agree on that.”

“I always let the prostitute into the car and then proceed to drive it into the water.  If she’s smart enough to get out (sometimes she just stays in there) I’ll go ahead and blast her once or twice, then watch her body float away.”

One Day After Sentencing, Ontario’s Prostitute Killer Goes Free

In 1988, 20 year old New Zealand sex worker Lynette White was stabbed more than 50 times.  Three men were convicted and served four years in prison.  This past March, 2009, thirteen police officers were charged with perverting the course of justice, 21 years after they allegedly “moulded, manipulated and fabricated” evidence to secure convictions against three men wrongly accused of killing a prostitute.
